BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Mr. Tarique Rahman attended the funeral prayer of Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar—a Language Movement veteran of 1952, member of the BNP National Standing Committee, former Acting President, former Speaker, former Minister, multiple-term Member of Parliament, distinguished statesman, and eminent jurist.
The funeral prayer was held today, Sunday (12 July 2026), after the Asr prayer at the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) Complex. Due to inclement weather, the prayer was held inside the entrance tunnel of the main Parliament building instead of the South Plaza.
Following the funeral prayer, the Military Secretary to the President, Major General A.S.M. Bahauddin, laid a wreath on behalf of President Mohammad Shahabuddin in tribute to the late leader.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman then paid his respects by laying a wreath. He also placed a wreath on behalf of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), accompanied by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other senior party leaders.
Floral tributes were also offered by Speaker Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, other Whips led by Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal, and the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat.
Following the tribute ceremony, brief memorial speeches recalling the late Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar's distinguished public life and contributions were delivered by Speaker Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, BNP Secretary General and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqul Islam, and Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam.
Earlier, during the parliamentary session, the National Parliament expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.
