Press Briefing

A proposal was adopted based on the discussions at the meeting of the National Standing Committee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), presided over by the BNP’s Acting Chairman Mr. Tarique Rahman:

As a continuation of the long sixteen-year democratic movement against fascism, Bangladesh was freed from fascism in 2024 through the student-led mass uprising. During this long struggle, hundreds of activists of the anti-government movement and the political leaders and workers of the opposition, along with countless citizens, became victims of enforced disappearances, killings, extrajudicial murders, fabricated cases, attacks, torture, and indescribable suffering. Under the pretext of so-called political incidents such as arson and vandalism, the fascist Sheikh Hasina and her regime carried out ruthless oppression, extreme tyranny, unlawful torture, and some of the most brutal killings in history—such as murdering citizens in the dead of night.

The world had long expected that democratic Bangladesh would establish the rule of law and justice. In line with that expectation, the verdict against fascist Sheikh Hasina and her two sons has been declared today.

This verdict has ensured the establishment of justice and the rule of law. According to legal provisions, the highest punishment has been awarded to fascist Sheikh Hasina, her two sons, and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. The sentence for the police personnel involved in misusing the police force against innocent people during the judicial process has been reduced to 5 years of imprisonment because of their cooperation during the trial.

BNP affirms that it is firmly committed to establishing the rule of law and justice and urges the public to remain vigilant in this regard. At the same time, BNP demands proper medical treatment for the accused in other BNP-related cases.

We believe that, after 16 long years of enforced disappearances, killings, and extrajudicial murders, and after losing loved ones during the 2024 mass uprising, the souls of the martyrs and the grief of their families and relatives will find some peace and consolation.
