Message from BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on the Occasion of Shaheed Dr. Milon Day

Message

“Shaheed Dr. Shamsul Alam Khan Milon is an important and unforgettable name in the democratic movement against autocracy during the 1980s. His supreme sacrifice will remain inscribed in golden letters in the history of the struggle for democracy. On 27 November 1990, during the anti-autocracy movement, he was martyred by bullets fired by the hired forces of the then government. On his martyrdom anniversary, I pray for the forgiveness and eternal peace of his soul.

Dr. Shamsul Alam Khan Milon sacrificed his life while working to free democracy from the shackles of authoritarian rule. In every struggle against oppressive and anti-democratic autocratic forces, Dr. Milon remains a constant source of inspiration for us.

During the terrible 16-year misrule of the fascist Awami government, people were deprived of their right to vote, freedom of speech, and all democratic rights. There was no minimum security for people’s lives and property. The level of persecution and torture inflicted upon BNP and opposition activists was beyond description. Although the united student–people’s movement of August 5 freed the country from autocratic rule, the conspirators are still lurking in the shadows, trying to destabilize the nation. But the people of Bangladesh are now united, and therefore the conspirators will never succeed. The sacrifice of Shaheed Dr. Milon will continue to inspire us in our struggle.

Only by establishing democracy on a strong foundation will Dr. Milon’s sacrifice be truly honored.

Allah Hafez, Bangladesh Zindabad.”
