The “Mother of Democracy,” the symbol of courage and struggle, a leader firmly committed to protecting independence and sovereignty, the undisputed champion of restoring democracy time and again, and an uncompromising legendary leader in safeguarding citizens’ rights, freedom of speech, and personal liberty — the Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia — passed away today at 6:00 a.m. at Evercare Hospital in the capital.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP expresses its deepest sorrow and grief at this heartbreaking loss. We respectfully request the people of the country, leaders and activists at all levels of the party, leaders of various political parties, and professional organizations to pray to Almighty Allah for the forgiveness (maghfirah) of the departed soul of our deshnetri.

Programme:

1. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP will observe seven days of mourning following the death of the “Mother of Democracy,” Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia.

2. Following the death of Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia, state mourning has been declared from 30 December 2025 to 1 January 2026. During these three days of declared state mourning, the national and party flags will be kept at half-mast and black flags will be hoisted at all party offices across the country.

3. At the central office as well as all party offices nationwide, black flags will be hoisted for seven days, and party flags will be kept at half-mast.

4. Leaders and activists at all levels of the party will wear black badges.

5. Qur’an Khatam and prayer sessions will be held for seven days at every party office, seeking blessings for the departed Deshnetri.

6. Books of condolence will be opened centrally at the BNP Chairperson’s Office in Gulshan, the BNP Central Office in Nayapaltan, and at district-level party offices.

7. The funeral prayer (Janazah) and burial schedule of the late Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia will be announced later.
