Statement by Professor Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Health Affairs Secretary of the BNP
“A distinguished medicine and ICU specialist of the country, Dr. Rayhan Rabbani, has been physically assaulted centering the death of a patient at a private hospital in the capital. At the same time, other doctors and staff members of the hospital were harassed, and disorder was created inside the medical institution. Dr. Rayhan Rabbani is a renowned physician. His contribution during the COVID period and various crisis moments has been widely appreciated. We express deep concern, anger, and strong condemnation over this incident.
The death of a patient is undoubtedly extremely painful. We sincerely understand the emotions and suffering of the family members. However, under no circumstances can taking the law into one’s own hands, attacking doctors, nurses, or hospital staff, intimidating them, or destroying the treatment environment be acceptable. Such activities are not only a threat to personal safety but also seriously damage the country’s overall healthcare system.
Sadly, in recent times, incidents of attacks, humiliation, and insecurity at workplaces against doctors in the country have increased alarmingly. Doctors are continuously serving people while risking their own lives, yet they themselves are repeatedly becoming victims of violence. If this situation continues, frustration will grow among skilled physicians, and the normal functioning of the healthcare sector will be disrupted.
Healthcare is a humanitarian and sensitive sector. Mutual respect, patience, and respect for the law are extremely important here. If there is any misunderstanding or complaint between doctors and patients’ relatives, it should be resolved through discussion and institutional processes, never through violence.
We strongly demand that the administration conduct a fair investigation into the incident and quickly bring the responsible individuals under the law. At the same time, we call for effective and permanent measures to ensure the safety of doctors and healthcare workers in all government and private hospitals across the country.
To prevent the recurrence of such incidents, an effective healthcare protection policy must be adopted so that the interests of both patients and doctors are protected. At the same time, necessary laws must be enacted to ensure the safety of doctors and exemplary punishment must be ensured for those who create disorder in hospitals.”
