Message by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Mr. Tarique Rahman on the Occasion of the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2026

Guided by the vision of “Bangladesh First,” the present government is firmly committed to building a green, climate-resilient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable Bangladesh. Our commitment is to give equal importance to development and environmental conservation in order to build a safe and liveable country for future generations.

To achieve this goal, the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2026 is a timely and significant initiative. This year’s theme—“Let Us Adorn the Country Through Tree Plantation, Bangladesh First”—reflects this national commitment.

The adverse effects of human activities are continuously increasing global warming, while the impacts of climate change are deeply affecting nature and human life around the world. Trees play an undeniable role in maintaining ecological balance and preventing the rise of global temperatures. They absorb atmospheric carbon, reduce excessive heat, and help keep the environment clean.

Taking this reality into consideration, the present government has adopted a landmark programme to plant 250 million trees over the next five years. This is not merely a government initiative; it is a national movement.

People are being engaged in tree plantation and care across the country, including in educational institutions, along roadsides and railway tracks, embankments, government forest lands, coastal char areas, urban areas, and residential premises. The participation of students in urban forestry and the initiative to distribute saplings free of cost are also highly commendable.

Through the implementation of these initiatives, the country’s tree cover will increase, it will become easier to address the adverse impacts of climate change, and the foundation for sustainable development will be further strengthened.

Just as a prosperous country and a strong economy are necessary for an improved quality of life, biodiversity-rich forests are essential for healthy living. A prosperous economy and green forests are closely interconnected.

Forests and tree plantation play an important supporting role in building a dynamic and promising green economy. Therefore, to cover the country in greenery, I make an earnest appeal to everyone—regardless of political affiliation—to participate in extensive afforestation activities in every suitable place, including around homes, on fallow and marginal lands, along canals and riverbanks, on embankments, roads and road medians, rooftops, and in cities and towns alike.

The Tree Fair plays an important role in further accelerating the country’s greening movement. To encourage people across the country to plant more trees, tree fairs will again be organised this year at the national, divisional, district, and upazila levels, alongside a three-month-long tree plantation campaign.

I hope that people will have the opportunity to collect improved varieties of saplings from the Tree Fair, while students will gain practical knowledge about plant diversity.

Let us each plant at least one tree and ensure its proper care in order to build a healthy, beautiful, clean, and safe Bangladesh for future generations.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to those who have received the National Tree Plantation Award 2025, the National Wildlife Conservation Award 2026, and social forestry benefit-sharing proceeds this year.

I wish the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2026 every success.
