Begum Khaleda Zia led BNP to a landslide win in the 2001 elections after 5 years of repressive rule by Sheikh Hasina. Despite two wars in the Middle-East and a global economic crisis, Begum Zia's government managed to keep the economy stable and achieve economic growth.
