Prime Minister and Leader of the House Mr Tarique Rahman today said that women lawmakers elected to the reserved seats also have the right to work for the development of their respective areas.

He made the remarks while responding to a supplementary question from Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem of Dhaka-14 in the Jatiya Sangsad, with Speaker Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, in the chair.

The opposition lawmaker raised the issue of ruling party women MPs elected from reserved seats being assigned to oversee development activities in constituencies represented by opposition MPs.

In reply, the Prime Minister said, “A few days ago, the women MPs were elected. According to the Constitution and existing laws, they do not have specific constituencies. You and I have designated constituencies, but they do not.”

Tarique Rahman, who is also the chairman of the ruling BNP, added, “Therefore, based on our political and organisational structure, we have designated certain areas where they can work from the party’s position.”

Addressing Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem, the Prime Minister said, “As an elected representative, you have every right to contribute to the development of your constituency. Likewise, since this Parliament has elected these female leaders as Members of Parliament, they also have the same right to work for the people of their respective areas.”

“Naturally, we are proceeding in accordance with the existing government rules. If there is any development-related matter in your constituency where my cooperation is needed, please let me know. I will certainly extend it,” he continued.
