Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Mr. Tarique Rahman inaugurated the World Environment Day and Environment Fair 2026 and the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2026, under the theme: “Let Us Adorn the Country Through Tree Plantation, Bangladesh First.”
He inaugurated the two events at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Bangladesh–China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital.
The programme began with recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by readings from other religious scriptures. A documentary highlighting the current government’s achievements in the environment, forest, and climate change sectors was then screened.
At the event, the Prime Minister presented the National Environment Award 2025, the National Wildlife Conservation Award 2026, and the National Tree Plantation Award 2025. He also distributed profit-sharing cheques among beneficiaries of social forestry programmes.
The event was chaired by Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo.
Special guests included the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Md. Saimum Parvez, and State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam.
Following the programme, the Prime Minister planted saplings of olive, jarul, and neem trees at the Bangladesh–China Friendship Conference Centre premises. He later visited different stalls at the National Tree Fair held at the former Dhaka International Trade Fair ground.
The fair has been organised to increase public participation in environmental conservation, forest expansion, and efforts to address the impacts of climate change.
Alongside the Environment Fair and month-long National Tree Fair in the capital, tree fairs are being organised for 15 days in seven divisional cities, for seven days in 56 district headquarters, and for three days in 29 upazilas. A total of 120 stalls are participating in the National Tree Fair in Dhaka.
A special cell has been formed under the Prime Minister’s Office to implement the master plan to plant 250 million trees over five years in order to maintain ecological balance.
Under this programme, afforestation activities will be monitored digitally through GIS, remote sensing, a National Tree Database, and drone technology. The initiative is expected to create approximately 350,000 new green jobs and develop 10,000 new nursery entrepreneurs.
Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman transformed tree plantation into a national movement in Bangladesh. At his initiative, the country’s first National Forest Policy was formulated in 1979.
Later, in 1994, then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia launched the National Tree Fair and played an important role in expanding social forestry. Continuing this legacy, the current government is working to establish technology-driven and sustainable forest management.
Earlier, on 13 June, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formally inaugurated the nationwide programme to plant 250 million trees in five years by planting a garjan sapling at the Malumghat Reserved Forest in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar.
