Dhaka, 30 December 2025: The Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has expressed deep sorrow and condolences at the death of three-time former Prime Minister, symbol of the democratic movement, and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
In a condolence message, the Chief Adviser said that with the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, the nation has lost a great guardian. He stated that he was deeply shocked and saddened by her demise.
Professor Yunus said that Begum Khaleda Zia was not merely the leader of a political party; she was an important chapter in the history of Bangladesh. Considering her contributions, long political struggle, and the deep emotions of the people toward her, the government declared her a Very Important Person of the State earlier this month.
The Chief Adviser noted that her role in establishing democracy, multi-party political culture, and the rights of the people in Bangladesh will be remembered with honor. Through her uncompromising leadership, the nation was repeatedly freed from undemocratic conditions and found inspiration for democratic restoration. The country and the nation will remember her contributions with profound respect.
He further said that despite political differences, her long political journey, people-oriented leadership, and firm determination for the welfare of the nation will continue to serve as guidance. With her death, the country has lost an experienced and tested statesperson.
Professor Yunus said that Begum Khaleda Zia was the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the Chairperson of the BNP, who led the struggle to restore democracy against autocratic rule.
He recalled that after the death of her husband, former President, Army Chief, and valiant freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman, Begum Khaleda Zia entered politics in 1982 from the life of a homemaker. Her strong leadership played a decisive role in bringing about the fall of the nine-year autocratic rule of Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
The Chief Adviser said that many of Begum Khaleda Zia’s initiatives and decisions took the country far forward. She introduced free education and stipends for girls, which is regarded as a milestone in the advancement of women’s education in Bangladesh.
He added that Begum Khaleda Zia was remarkably successful in her political career. She never lost an election. In the general elections from 1991 to 2001, she was elected from five separate parliamentary constituencies. In 2008, she contested from three constituencies and won in all of them.
Professor Yunus said that after being elected Prime Minister in 1991, she laid a strong foundation for the national economy through economic liberalization.
He further stated that during Sheikh Hasina’s fascist rule, Begum Khaleda Zia stood as a unique symbol of struggle and resistance. Her uncompromising stance inspired the nation immensely throughout prolonged movements and struggles.
The Chief Adviser said that due to her political success, Begum Khaleda Zia became a victim of extreme political vengeance. She was sentenced to 17 years in prison in false and fabricated cases and had to endure long periods of incarceration.
Expressing condolences, the Chief Adviser conveyed deep sympathy to her bereaved family members and party leaders and activists. On this day of irreparable national loss, he urged the people of the country to remain calm and patient, and requested everyone to pray for Begum Khaleda Zia according to their respective faiths.
